Weekend Workshop: Spelling Instruction that Sticks

I’m Anna Geiger, founder of Reach All Readers.

For years, I taught reading through a balanced literacy lens, and I believed that students would better remember spelling words if I led them to "discover" the patterns on their own.

But as I dug into research, interviewed experts, and worked with teachers, I learned this: Students benefit from direct instruction in all elements of spelling - phonology, orthography, and morphology.

I’ve spent over 20 years teaching, learning, unlearning, and rebuilding my approach to literacy instruction.

This workshop is about helping teachers let go of ineffective teaching practices and give spelling instruction that sticks.

There are a lot of "science of reading" voices out there. Why should I listen to you?

You're wise to be cautious! What makes this different is that I'm not here to overwhelm you with jargon or make you feel like you've been doing everything wrong.

I'm a fellow educator who's been in the trenches, and I've spent years translating the research into real-world strategies for busy teachers.

I'm not just another social media voice. I've invested deeply in this work, and I'm currently pursuing a PhD in Literacy so I can continue bringing clarity and confidence to teachers like you.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is designed specifically for elementary teachers, literacy coaches, and interventionists who work with students in K-3rd grade or older struggling spellers.

How much time will it take to implement what I learn?

You'll be able to make small, meaningful changes right away. This is about doing things better, not doing more.

What if I feel shaky about the science of reading?

That's okay. I explain the research in plain language.

Will this work if my students are just starting to learn to spell words?

Yes. We'll discuss how to get started with spelling instruction and how to build on that foundation.

What if I can't attend live?

No problem. A replay is included and yours for a full year.

Will this really answer my questions?

Yes. The workshop is in a live Zoom format, so you can ask your questions in real time.
